Go to the museum again

Some suggestions from Klaus Herrmann

According to a recent scientific study, visits to museums are a good prevention against dementia. The same is probably true of exhibitions, and the news will hardly come as a surprise to us collectors. Three or four suggestions for the coming weeks in south-west Germany.

Icons of fashion
Photographs by Regina Relang at the Kurpfälzisches Museum Heidelberg
Exhibition from 26 April to 19 July 2026

Regina Relang is considered one of the most important fashion photographers of the post-war period. In the 1950s and 1960s, she documented haute couture in Paris, including the collections of Christian Dior, Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent. The exhibition presents around 80 outstanding photographs that open up fascinating perspectives on the "icons of fashion". The fashionable journey through the decades is stylishly rounded off with accessories typical of the era.

All photographs come from the Munich City Museum, Photography Collection, Regina Relang Estate.

Award-winning photography: The Leica Oskar Barnack Award
at the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museum, Mannheim from 14 April to 14 June 2026

The Leica Oskar Barnack Award - LOBA for short - is one of the most prestigious prizes for photojournalists. It honours work that deals with socially relevant topics and shows the people behind the statistics and headlines.

From mid-April to mid-June, the works of the current award winners and several nominees will be on display at the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen in Mannheim.

Sibylle Bergemann - Photography 1966 to 2010
Kunsthalle Göppingen from 03 March - 28 June 226

Her portrait, fashion and documentary photographs made her internationally famous even in GDR times. She photographed Katharina Thalbach and Nina Hagen, and her portraits made her one of the country's most important photographers. The Kunsthalle Göppingen is dedicating the first major solo exhibition in south-west Germany to the photographer, who co-founded the renowned Berlin photo agency Ostkreuz after reunification. On display are photographs from 1966 to 2010.

A welcome addition awaits nearby: Filseck Castle is also showing an exhibition of her partner and mentor Arno Fischer's work until 28 June. A shuttle runs between the two venues. Anyone travelling to Göppingen should not miss the opportunity to experience the work of both photographers side by side.
